• Devon Doctors teams up with GP and Ivybridge Rotary Club to raise 17k for Nepal earthquake victims

Devon Doctors has helped a Plymouth GP and Ivybridge Rotary Club to raise almost £17,000 to help victims of April’s Nepal earthquake.

The quake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, killed more than 9,000 people, injuring 23,000 more; it affected the lives of at least eight million people, leaving many homeless, and prompted a huge fundraising effort from General Practitioner Dr Paul Fletcher.

That effort concluded earlier this month when Ivybridge Rotary Club presented representatives of the Cornwall-based disaster-relief charity ShelterBox with a cheque for £16,802.

More than £2,000 was raised by a collection at the Tesco store in Lee Mill and donations from individuals and local businesses, before Rotarian Dr Fletcher appealed to doctors, nurses and other staff working alongside him in the Devon Doctors OOH service to donate their earnings from a single shift. This raised in excess of £7,000 which was matched by the Exeter-based not-for-profit organisation.

"Although the series of earthquakes which created such devastation are no longer seen to be newsworthy, the disastrous impact which they have had on the lives of the people has far from gone away," reflected Dr Fletcher. "Their homes have been destroyed and their main sources of income are no longer there to help them to an early recovery.

"Myself and my friends at Ivybridge Rotary Club were keen to help and I am delighted that we have been able to raise so much for people who never ask for or expect foreign aid. It goes without saying, I am extremely grateful to all those individuals who donated time and money to this cause, while the extraordinary generosity of Devon Doctors’ chief executive Chris Wright and his board of directors should also be applauded."

"Devon Doctors is a social enterprise and, as such, is committed to putting people before profit and delighted to have been able to help Paul and his colleagues at Ivybridge Rotary Club raise cash for such a deserving cause," said Mr Wright.

"ShelterBox does lots of fantastic work across the globe and I’m proud that Devon Doctors has been able to make a small contribution to its efforts to support the people of Nepal as they continue to rebuild their country."

ShelterBox’s Rotary Liaison Officer David Glover said: ‘This is an amazing total, and shows a really generous joint effort between Ivybridge Rotary and Devon Doctors."I was very pleased to give a presentation to many of the fundraisers, because ShelterBox’s response to Nepal is turning out to be one of our most complex and longest-running. The conditions could hardly be more challenging – poor weather, inaccessible villages, extreme damage, altitude sickness, even fuel shortages. But the need is still there, so ShelterBox is still there.’
