• Trek along coastal path sees doctor put pen to paper

A Devon Doctors GP has written a book detailing her experience of walking all 630 miles of the South West Coastal Path.

And sales of Dr Kathryn’s Shore’s memoir, Keep the Sea on the Right – Walking the South West Coast Path in Winter, will raise cash for Dorothy House Hospice and Exeter Hospiscare.

“At the age of 14 on my first youth hostelling holiday, I saw the start of the South West Coast Path,” recalled Kathryn, who has worked for Devon Doctors as a GP locum since 2006 and now does most of her shifts in Exeter.

“Almost immediately I decided that, impossibly long as it seemed, one day I would walk almost 630 miles of it. Thirty five years later I eventually achieved that ambition after setting out near the end of 2010 and reaching South Haven Point on Sunday, December 12.

Kathryn’s trek coincided with the terminal illness of her father, John Shore, from cancer and, following her epic journey, she decided to write a book detailing her experiences.

The walk had captured her father’s imagination and the book, which took more than a year to write, weaves Kathryn’s thoughts about her adventure with her father’s final journey.

It is dedicated to him and also to Professor Kieran Sweeney who, as many in Devon Doctors will remember, died with mesothelioma in December 2009.

“I’d be extremely grateful if my friends and colleagues would consider buying the book,” said Kathryn, who also works as a locum GP in several practices in and around Exeter, as a GP appraiser and as GP referral facilitator at Devon Referral Support Services [previously DART].

“Not only will they be helping two wonderful charities but they can also read about all the escapades and adventures I enjoyed during my walk.

“These included walking through a ‘major disaster area’, two days trekking through snow, and wading across the very cold River Erme to avoid an eight-mile detour.

“I won’t tell you any more, you’ll just have to buy the book!”

l Keep the Sea on the Right – Walking the South West Coast Path in Winter is available to download on eBook readers and to buy from iBookstore via the following link: http://www.lulu.com/shop/kathryn-hough/keep-the-sea-on-the-right-walking...

The book is priced at just £1.99 of which £1.20 will be shared between the two charities.
