Devon Doctors Group are an award-winning not-for-profit social enterprise, Putting Patients First with a focus on providing high-quality care, and with any financial surpluses reinvested into our services.
As the Provider of the Integrated Urgent Care Services comprising NHS 111 and urgent out-of-hours care in both Devon and Somerset, of the Mayflower Medical Group practices in Plymouth and Clock Tower Surgery in Exeter, and of several dental services across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and BNSSG, we offer a great opportunity to expand your horizons and take on new challenges.
We have a variety of clinical roles available, including Nurse, Clinical Pharmacist, Paramedic, 111 Clinical Advisor, Dental Nurse, and Locum / Sessional / Self-Employed GP and Dentist positions.
Both in and out of hours we offer flexible shifts at great rates across Devon and Somerset within primary care, urgent care and NHS 111, and within the dental services we provide across Devon and Dorset.
We can offer a variety of shift types including home visiting, seeing patients at our bases in local hospitals / practices, and telephone triage from our Clinical Assessment Service premises in Plymouth, Exeter and Taunton.
If you would like to find out more information about the opportunities available, please select the role you are looking for from the list below.
Working with us as an NHS 111 Clinical Advisor you can expect the following:
“I’ve been working for the 111 Service for almost three years and love it! The job variety is amazing and no two calls are ever the same; one call may involve talking a patient through managing a minor injury at home, and the next talking someone through CPR. If like me you come from a reasonably specialised background, variety can sometimes be scary; that is where the triage tool we use called Pathways is so good, as it really does become integrated into your clinical thought process. While we often speak to patients on a one-to-one basis, we always have a Clinical Navigator to call on for support. The teams and clinical colleagues I work with are the best, are always happy to talk cases through and offer support. The Health Advisors are fantastic and a wealth of information and support. The people I work with are a big part of why I enjoy my job, and real friendships are formed. There are lots of opportunities to add new skills, such as coaching, auditing, shift navigating, and training, so I speak from experience when I say there’s nothing boring about 111!”
111 Clinical Advisor - Devon Doctors Group
“This role uses all of the experience and skills that I have gained in my nursing career so far. Every day is different and interesting; no two days are the same. This is a great place to expand your clinical knowledge and assessment skills, and the support is second to none. The training and development opportunities are excellent – There are plenty of ways in which you can develop your career further. Flexibility of hours around study commitments led me to choose this role.”

Working for us in an employed role you can expect the following:
“Having worked for Devon Doctors for two years, I have made many new friends and gradually extended my role with support offered and constant access to our lead clinicians. I only take on calls that I feel comfortable dealing with and have increased the complexity as my confidence has grown. I find the work covers a huge variety of presentations and we have the flexibility to provide the care the patient needs, as the company really does put patients first rather than the pressure of time as can be the case in other primary care settings. The shifts are flexible and really easy to organise via internet or Rota Team. The pay is good and there are extra payments out of hours. I enjoy the freedom to have days off on weekdays. The lead clinician is always available and happy to support us in any way we need, providing responsive clinical supervision.”
Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Devon Doctors Group
“As a paramedic I find the support from other clinicians fantastic, with advice and guidance always available. My Advanced Paramedic role gives me a great opportunity to work in different environments; I get to treat patients in our Treatment Centres, or by visiting them in their homes. It's really satisfying to be able to see and treat patients in their own homes, reducing their anxieties, helping to decrease demand on hospitals and the ambulance service.”
Advanced Paramedic – Devon Doctors Group
“I love the depth and variety of cases seen within the OOHs service; patients are often sicker and have more urgent health care needs compared to those presenting in-hours. Needing to triage cases and determining the correct care pathway is challenging and also rewarding. I often work as a solo clinician at a Treatment Centre but I never feel alone – Clinical support is only a phone call away through the centrally based lead clinician. I feel supported and valued amongst my peers and am forever grateful for the regular offers of tea and cake from our support staff colleagues.”
Advanced Paramedic Practitioner – Devon Doctors Group
“As a relatively new starter at Devon Doctors I have so far had a very positive experience. The working environment is very supportive and friendly, it's been a great way to network with other clinicians and the flexible working hours compliment my full-time job perfectly. Great learning opportunities and regular updates mean it's a great position for anyone wishing to expand their role as a clinician”.
Clinical Pharmacist – Devon Doctors Group
“I have worked for Devon Doctors Group for several years. The work and hours are very flexible and I find the hours fit really well with family life. I often do five hour shifts, for example, which works really well for me. More recently there has been in-hours work which has been a great addition to the many workable options. I find the telephone triage work particularly enjoyable and varied. My stress levels are low and I believe this is due to the nature and structure of the work and to having helpful and friendly colleagues. My manager has been consistently supportive and proactive and is exemplary in providing what I need to support me professionally."

Working with us as Locum / Sessional GP you can expect the following:
“I really enjoy the variety of work, the lack of admin, the very flexible staff and flexible finish times. The Rota Team are excellent at trying to make shifts work around my young family and do their best to accommodate my requests. The mixture of weekday, evening, and weekend work really helps with family life. I find the rates of pay generous and the work a lot less stressful than what I face in the surgery.”
OOH Locum / Sessional GP – Devon Doctors Group
“I enjoyed my ST1 and ST3 placements with Devon Doctors so much, I couldn’t wait to sign up the minute I completed VTS. I really enjoy the acute side of General Practice, working in well equipped, friendly and organised treatment centres across both counties. The whole team of GPs, ACPs, Drivers and administration staff are exceptionally friendly. You simply can’t beat being chauffeured around the Devon and Somerset countryside in a well-equipped car, doing a job you enjoy and being remunerated well.”
OOH Locum / Sessional GP – Devon Doctors Group
“Devon Doctors allows clinicians to experience acute medical, surgical and psychiatric pathology, which may not be common in day to day general practice. Shifts are varied and unlike with a lot of day to day general practice, the bulk of the work is genuine pathology which is both refreshing and satisfying to deal with. Similarly, we often encounter patients who are more unwell than we might normally see in day to day general practice, and the experience of this is extremely valuable. Shift patterns are flexible and there is plenty of work available. There is always a sense of comradery at the bases and you will never feel isolated. The rate of pay is attractive, particularly around public holidays.”
OOH Locum / Sessional GP – Devon Doctors Group
"I’ve enjoyed working in OOH for over 20 years now – I love the camaraderie amongst the team, and the clinical stuff really keeps me on my toes too, especially if I choose to have a trainee with me, and I’m sure helps me to be a bit more efficient and focused at the day job. It can feel like you are making a real difference to patients at their time of need, especially on some of the palliative care home visits.”

In a few days you’ll soon be signed off and a friendly member of the Devon Doctors Group team will be in touch to arrange an orientation session.
This paid session takes place prior to working any clinical shifts. Here we will show you around your preferred base, get you set up on our system and make sure you have access to everything you need to know before you start your first shift with us.
Once you’ve had your orientation session, you’re ready to start picking up shifts. Our Rota Team are available Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and the online shift booking system is available at your fingertips 24 / 7 / 365 for you to amend or pick up shifts whenever suits you.
The most important stage of the process is the final one – follow up. Every clinician has a dedicated point of contact for ongoing queries and support depending on their role. However, we really value your feedback and once you’ve had chance to settle in, a member of our clinical team will be in touch to see how you’re getting on. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a short survey to feedback on your experience of this process and how we can further improve it.
If you have any queries regarding our sign-up process, shifts available, or for any other information you can get in touch by email to ddooh.gp@nhs.net, or if you would prefer, call us on 0300 303 1722.
Please note that there may be occasions where salaried GP positions are available within the Devon Doctors Group portfolio of services; please see the Others Vacancies section for more information on available salaried roles.
